Download NowMy perception of time was shaped in the narrow alleys of Prague's Josefov. As a member of the local Jewish community, I grew up listening to prayers in the Old-New Synagogue and looking up at the tower of the Jewish Town Hall. I was always fascinated by the unique contrast of its two clocks: while the upper ones measure time "conventionally," the lower dial with Hebrew numerals has been turning in reverse—right to left—since 1764.
This "counter-clockwise" movement, mirroring the direction of the Hebrew script, has always symbolized to me that time doesn't just slip away; it can also lead us back to our roots — to ancient Hebrew dates and the rhythm of the Jewish calendar. From the clock tower, you can see directly to the Old-New Synagogue, where the famous Rabbi Löw used to pray—and where, according to legend, he silenced the ticking of his Golem, a creature that had escaped control, by removing the mystical shem from its forehead. The Golem is said to still rest in the synagogue's attic to this day. This peculiar closeness of clocks and legends inspired me to translate Prague's magic into a modern form. My Android widget was thus created as a digital tribute to these famous clocks, legends, and the Prague Jewish community.
